Group 3-Meghan North-New Literacies

The class about new literacies and technology really made me more aware of the importance of exploring ways to use technology when teaching. This week I tried a lesson using teacher tube and the klvx.org website's video streaming to research new advances in transportation. We watched about four or five short clips and discussed each one. Then I asked the kids to design a car of the future and describe it. They presented their work today, and it was really fun to see what they came up with. It was an interesting lesson for me because I learned new things right along with the students; it was interesting for them because we tried something new and exciting. How important do you feel technology is in the classroom? How often do you believe it should be incorporated? What new technologies have you tried and found successful?

I think technology in the classroom is important, especially in today’s society. Teaching is not just about reading, writing, and math- we are also supposed to be preparing student for their futures, which includes technology- some that I think we can not even imagine yet. I like to have the students do power point presentations, use overheads and make videos of themselves at home to play for the class. All the students in my classroom have cell phones and digital cameras, why not tap into those resources for educational purposes? Talk about inventions and how long each of these items have been around for, what were the originals they came from, etc. I have found video streaming to be the most beneficial new technology for my classroom. I do not use it with every lesson, but in some areas, like science, it is really helpful because we can not do things like dissections- but we can watch one being done. The students really like it also!

i have found it helpful to use tech. in the classroom. In my practicum I was in a classroom that used the internet, computers, projectors, smart boards etc it is one of only 3 type of tech. classrooms in the school, in the last week of my practicum i was in a classroom that did not have any of the tech. in the room. There was no comparison the tech classroom was so much better. The teacher was able to show pictures from the internet, the students got to do research and watch videos. The over head projetor was a sad replacemnt. I think if possible we should use as much tech. in the classroom.

In the classroom that I was in I used old technology. It had to be a part of one of my lesson. It was required that we used some sort of technology. I used an overhead. It was a lesson on money. In my other method class my teacher showed us a really interesting website. It is called brainpop.com. There are several different subject areas. Science, social studies, English, math, technology, arts and music, and health. Also in my class, I don’t know about other schools, they have the announcements come over the T.V. You can also put on the T.V. what the teacher is doing on the computer. If a classroom does not have computers for your students, having this T.V. is a good idea. Every student can see what the teacher is doing.

There is no doubt in my mind that technology is a fundamental part of effective teaching. Techology does not only increase stduents' awareness about everything new that is happing, but it is also a good source of communication. As future teachers we should provide our students with ample opportunities to have access to good literacy sources, e.g. websites offering high quality literature books along with questions checking for comprehehion, or other game like acativities related to reading or writing.
Using technology in the classroom is an essential tool which if used carefully and effectively can promote the literacy development of the students.
