After our discussion on Wednesday I have foudn myself thinking about new literacies, technology, and children's access to them. By the simple fact that I am posting this post on a blog we can see that new technology can be powerful tools. The power of the individual can be seen more and more in today's modern society and WEB 2.0 seems like a path to true democracy.
Is it wise however to block our children's supervised use of this technology? At my work (Don Hayden ES) and through out Clark County children do not get access to blogs or other user generated content for fear of them being exposed to innapropriate material. If the idea of WEB 2.0 user generated content is the wave of the future however are we doing our children a diservice through limiting them? If not how should we limit them? (i.e. district supervised user generated content and the like). Other random thoughts are welcome.

Technology in the classroom is a great tool for teaching. It's an engaging and active teaching technique and it can be an excellent motivator. I think that students should have limited access to the web. Many web sites are inappropriate for children to visit while in school. However, I believe that teachers should have access to the same web sites that students are banned from. Teachers should be able to search the sites for appropriate content and decide whether or not to use the material during class.
I absolutely feel that web sites should be restricted for student use. There are so many terrible things posted on the web, so much I feel a child should never have exposure to. I agree that students should be given access to the web, but there needs to be very very very strict supervision when they are on it. I know this is wishful thinking, but it would be nice to think that parents are supervising and restricting access at home, but that's not likely and a little scary as well.
