Hi All,
I am tutoring a third grade boy who is reading at a seventh grade level. He has comprehension like you wouldn't believe-but his attention span is very short! My main focus with his is fluency and spelling (complex suffixes are difficult for him), so the familiar reading will help with fluency-but do you have any ideas for spelling that will keep his interest?

I would suggest maybe playing a spelling game. A spelling game I saw in one of my observances before was called SPELO, it is a version of BINGO. Create BINGO cards, except put SPELO at the top. In the squares put words you want them to spell. Then create cards to draw out of a hopper, i.e. S-Weather, or P-Monster, etc. Then as you pull the cards, the student must spell the word out loud correctly in order to mark off that square on their card. If they spell the word incorrectly they can not cover that spot. The end goal is to mark off an entire row on their card and call out spelo. Then they must respell all the words they marked off. It is more fun with an entire group, but I think you could make it work if you play with the student.
Do you mean spelling in the since of keeping his attention? I would make a game out of the words. You could do word searches or word scavenger hunts. Some kind of fun activity that he would find interensting. Make sure it has challenges; so he is always on his toes and it keeps him engaged.
