Group 8 Amber Thorsen (2)

My tutee's writing is not very descriptive or interesting. The actual writing does show proof of good sentence structure with accurate puncuation and capitalization. What are some suggestions that I can consider for my future lessons without the use of worksheets? (student is going into 5th grade)

If you do not want to use worksheets, perhaps another way of being descriptive can be, role-playing? You said the writing style is not very descriptive, maybe the student has a hard time putting thoughts into words down on paper. Pick a subject/topic that would be a 4th-5th grade level and have the student role-play/ write down descriptive words on paper. Maybe that will help them write better sentences. Sort of like a graphic organizer come to life.

I have the same problem with my student. What I tried last session was I re-wrote her last writing sample and we went through it together word by word to try to add punctuation and capitalization and maybe change the wording.
Another thing that I was thinking about is that you start the writing process with her each day going through each step. So your first day would be ideas, and make her come up with some ideas and do a web chart identifying different things but guide her don’t just let her do it herself. With each step you take as long as you guide her she should be able to pull of a pretty good piece of writing. I am starting this with my tutee today, my steps are going to be a lot simpler then your because my girl is a lot lower then your but I think it could work for you. Especially if she doesn’t use the writing process very much.
