Group 6 Kristi DeBerg

Hello group! What I have been thinking about is using pictures to teach literature. In one of the classes that I am taking the teacher has us write quite a few two page papers based off of pictures in a book. I have not seen this strategy done anywhere else in a classroom. Is it common to have the students learn about history by only discussing pictures? or is it best to have a combination of Pictures and then actuall teaching of facts. I just found this interesting and full off different interpurtations. Please comment back on your feelings on using only pictures to teach a point.

Personally, I feel that it is best to have a combination of pictures and actual teaching of facts when addressing a point. The interesting part is that if you decide to use books such as a textbook or a book where Historical Fiction is the genre, the quality of the pictures can help to enhance the text (facts) that are presented. This is one of the things that I remember from my Children's Literature class when we were having a similar discussion to this one. If students are having difficulty with the text (facts), they can also rely on the pictures to make sense of what they need to. This can ensure student success and even make the material more interesting for the students because they will become engaged in the content.

Hey everyone!
I actually think that this is very interesting. I also agree that you really do need a combination of both. I think that pictures are a great way to teach things to children, at any level. Its a great way to have them making interpretations or evaluations, instead of just reading something. While I think it is important to teach a combination of both, its important to make sure that they go together. I think that I would use the pictures and then follow-up with something to do about the facts, maybe a game or something. But pictures are great, they just shouldn't be the only part.

Hello Group,

It is important to use a variety of sources when teaching. Therefore, I think incorporating pictures into literature curriculum is a good idea. Pictures are useful because they are a visual representation of the material. Some students are visual learners. Using pictures will help meet the needs of those students. However, pictures should not be used independently. To teacher something, a teacher should use other forms of text and media along with the pictures. This allows for a well balanced representation of the content.

I believe that a combination of both is best. There are only so many facts that can be gleened from a picture. The pictures should be used as an aid to help students understand the facts that are presented. If they only use pictures they will not get the whole story. Also, pictures can be interepreted very differently by different people, so it is best to combine it with the text in order to know and learn the whole story.
