Group 3- Leader #4- older literacy students & attitude

Hi group! I teach 4th grade, so I obviously work with older elementary age students. One problem I have found when working with older students who have problems in literacy is that their attitude is often what gets in their way of success. It may be true that the students who are struggling with reading or writing do have some type of learning disability or impairment that could slow them down- however, it’s the adolescent behavior that blocks them from seeking the help that they need. I feel like my biggest struggle when helping lower achieving students is to break through the mentality that they don’t need help because it isn’t cool or breaking through their coping strategies and getting them to try. What do you think? Do you find similar problems if you have worked in older grades? Any suggestions for how to deal with this problem?

I am in a first grade class. I don’t know about any other school but where I am at they do A.R. I forget what the A.R. stands for. But the students read a book at their level. If they pass a test then they get a couple of check marks or move up a level depending on how many check marks they have already earned. There are the usual students. The upper, middle, and lower part of the class. Being with them for a couple of months I know what level they are on. There is one student who will not read books on his level. I try to tell him to try and read a book but he says that they are too hard. I have offered to read the books with him and he took me up on the offer once. He read a book on his level. I know he can read them because he reads books on his level during their guided reading with the teacher. I don’t think that it is because he can’t read. I think that it is because he just chooses not to. I know that in my class there are a few lower students. They are not on grade level. This however does not hold them back them from reading. They do read it is just they would prefer help when they do read. When kids are younger they seem to want the help. I don’t know how it is in the older grades. I have typically worked with the younger children.
