Discussion Group #2
Hi everyone,
My tutee is a five year old kindergartner. His teacher requested him to be held back and repeat kindergarten, if he doesn't repeat K, than his teacher is confident that he will need to repeat first grade. Of course, his mother doesn't want this to happen and has provided me with a list of areas he needs to work on. This list has become my goal guideline for lessons. Here are a few of the areas: know beginning and ending consonant letters and sounds, vowel patters, blending sounds, practicing reading using sight words and sounding out words. My question is: He is proficient when it comes to knowing all 26 letters of the alphabet and their individual sounds, but when I have him spell and say the words out loud listening for each beginning or ending sounds, he is not able to correctly answer. He is an ELL student and his mother has a hard time speaking English. Does anyone have any suggestions for activities that his mother could help him with, even though she doesn't speak fluent English?

Can he identify and write all 26 letters of the alphabet? Because I was going to say, if he can't write them, I just got this program from my CT and it generates letters of the alphabet for practioce writing. It's hard to explain, but I'll bring you some worksheets. I would suggest to send home sight words just to get him started. Have him practice the words and also have hime practice writing them. Maybe even some easy read books.
You know in the class im observing we have the same problem with a student, however he is in 1st grade. We have him go to speech therapy, and we work individually with him everyday on his blending sounds, vowel patterns, etc... It is crucial that the parents of the your student have him practice at home. If they can't help him because they are not fluent in english they can help him by getting tools to practice such as leap frog, or practice workbooks, or they can probably help him with just limiting his spanish t.v. etc... When at school its important to get as much done , but since kinder is not all day your very limited. I wouldnt hold him in kindergarten either, since in first grade they will be going over alot of the same things. My co op teacher told me that some students just get how to do things such as reading half way through the years or in a few months.
I took a class last semester that focused on teaching ELL students. One of the things I found interesting in the class was different ways the teacher could teach word learning strategies. A few of the things listed were barrier games, list-group-label, and vocabulary journals. If the teacher does these things in the classroom the student can also use these stratgies at home. The vocabulary journal helps the student to have a place to collect information about all of the words they learn. ELL learners will benefit from journals because it allows them to focus on multiple meaning words. I thought a vocabulary journal would be good for a student to take home and work with his mom on the different words they had written down that day. I think by doing this the parent can help the student as well as the student helping the parent.
